How to perform detailing on your car interior

If you want to keep your looking its best, it’s important that you take care of it. Not only does this mean regular maintenance under the hood, but a thorough detailing in the interior. Detailing goes above and beyond just vacuuming and washing your vehicle. If you want to save yourself some money, interior detailing is something that can easily be done at home. To help our customers here at Don Jacobs Toyota, we’ve created basic instructions for how to detail a car interior.

1. Vacuum surfaces

The first thing you’ll want to do is remove your floor mats and vacuum them thoroughly. Next, vacuum the floors, trunk, upholstery and dash, removing all dirt and dust. When vacuuming, a good practice is to start from the top and work your way down.

2. Clean carpet and surfaces

Any stains in the carpet or upholster can be cleaned with a foaming cleanser. Apply the cleanser directly to the stain and rub with a damp sponge or cloth. Allow it to sit a few minutes before drying. Repeat this step if the stain doesn’t come out. When you’re finished, be sure to dry the spot thoroughly to prevent mold. Floor mats should be washed with water and left outside to dry completely.

Next, use compressed air and detailing brushes to get dust out of buttons and crevices in your dash and interior doors. Then, use a mild all-purpose cleaner to wipe hard surfaces inside your car. This will remove any dust or dirt built up on your car’s interior surfaces.

Be sure to clean out your air vents with a detailing brush or microfiber cloth, ensuring that all dust is
picked up.

3. Wash seats

Cleaning your seats is a big part of detailing. However, different types of seats require different cleaning methods. Cloth interiors made of nylon or other cloth can be shampooed with a wet-vac extraction machine. Make sure that cloth is thoroughly dried after shampooing.

Leather or vinyl interiors can be clean with special leather or vinyl cleaners, then hit with a leather brush. Afterwards, the cleaner can be wiped away with a microfiber cloth. If necessary, condition your leather seats after shampooing to prevent drying and cracking.

4. Wipe windows

Finally, spray glass cleaner on your windows and mirrors and wipe them clean.

A good detailing is a must for keeping a well-maintained car. It goes beyond a simple vacuuming. We hope that these instructions were helpful in teaching you how to detail a car interior.
